# Canvas navigation

How to get around the editor's canvas — zooming, panning, selecting, and the
commands that act on the whole capture.

## The zoom control

The zoom control sits in the editor's title bar — at the right end on macOS,
at the left end on Windows (where the window buttons and the editor menu take
the right).

| Control | What it does |
|---------|--------------|
| **−** / **+** | Zoom out / in one step |
| **Slider** | Drag to set any zoom level |
| **Percentage** | Shows the current zoom; click it to go back to **100%** |
| **W × H px** | The size of the image you'll export, in pixels |

**100%** means 1:1 with your screen — the capture looks exactly as it did when
you took it. Zoom ranges from 10% to 400%.

The size readout shows the artboard's size when a background is on, and the
cropped capture's size otherwise — see [Artboard](/docs/hypershot/editing/artboard).

## Zooming

- **Mouse wheel** — Scroll to zoom in or out around the pointer
- **Trackpad** — Pinch to zoom, or hold **Cmd/Ctrl** and scroll with two
  fingers
- **View menu** — **Zoom In**, **Zoom Out**, **Actual Size**, and
**Fit to Window** (fits the artboard in the window). On macOS the View menu
is in the menu bar; on Windows it's in the editor menu in the title bar.
  Their shortcuts are listed under
  [Viewport](/docs/hypershot/keyboard-shortcuts#viewport)

## Panning

- **Trackpad** — Scroll with two fingers
- **Space + drag** — Hold **Space** and drag the canvas; release **Space** to
go back to the tool you were using
- **Middle mouse button** — Drag with the middle button pressed
- **Pan tool** — Click the small caret on the toolbar's **Select** button (or
click the button again while Select is active) and choose **Pan** for a
hand that stays active until you pick another tool

## Selecting

Click an annotation to select it; **Shift**-click or drag a marquee over empty
canvas to select several. [Selecting](/docs/hypershot/editing/selecting)
covers all the ways in.

With more than one annotation selected, a single combined box surrounds them
all. Drag inside it to move everything together. The combined box has no
resize or rotate handles — to resize or rotate, select one annotation at a
time.

## Rotating an annotation

A selected annotation shows a round rotation handle 20 px above the middle of
its top edge. Drag it to rotate freely; hold **Shift** to snap to 45° steps.

There's no rotation handle on arrows and lines (they're shaped with their own
control points), on redactions, or on a multiple selection. For moving and
resizing, see [Moving & Resizing](/docs/hypershot/editing/moving-resizing).

## The right-click menu

Right-click an annotation for a menu of actions on it:

| Item | Available on |
|------|--------------|
| **Flip Horizontal** / **Flip Vertical** | Images (media) only |
| **Bring to Front** / **Send to Back** | Everything except redactions and spotlights, which keep a fixed stacking order |
| **Add color to favorites** | Annotations with a color — adds it to your saved colors in the [Color Selector](/docs/hypershot/editing/color-selector) |
| **Select all** *(type)* | Everything — e.g. **Select all Arrows** selects every arrow in the capture |
| **Delete** | Everything |

## Rotating and flipping the capture

To turn or mirror the screenshot itself rather than one annotation, use the
**Edit** menu:

| Command | macOS | Windows |
|---------|-------|---------|
| Rotate Capture Clockwise | ⌘R | Ctrl+R |
| Rotate Capture Counter-Clockwise | ⌘⇧R | Ctrl+Shift+R |
| Flip Capture Horizontal | — | — |
| Flip Capture Vertical | — | — |

Rotation turns the capture in 90° steps. These commands change the screenshot
underneath; your annotations stay where they are. Like everything else in the
editor, they can be undone.

The same menu has **Reset Artboard**, which puts the crop, padding, and
background back to how the capture started — see
[Artboard](/docs/hypershot/editing/artboard#reset-artboard).
