Troubleshooting
The most common “nothing is happening” cases, and what the menu’s status line tells you about each one.
Nothing is showing at all
Section titled “Nothing is showing at all”Work top to bottom:
- Is the app running? Look for the hyperbin item in your menu bar (macOS) or system tray (Windows). If it’s missing, launch it from Applications / the Start menu
- Is the animation enabled? Tick Show Animation in the menu — it can be off without changing any other setting
- Is the Trash actually full enough? In the default More Trash, More Effect mode, nothing happens until the Trash passes the Trash Threshold (100 MB by default). Switch Amount to Just a Little or Oh the Horror! to test without waiting for the threshold
- Does the status line name a problem? The line at the top of the menu says why the effect is idle — for example a missing permission on macOS, or the Trash icon being off screen
“Trash icon is off screen”
Section titled ““Trash icon is off screen””The effect sits on top of the Trash icon in the Dock, so there is nothing to draw on while the Dock is hidden. Reveal the Dock (move the pointer to its edge) and the effect returns — revealing an auto-hidden Dock can lag up to a second.
macOS: the effect won’t track the bin
Section titled “macOS: the effect won’t track the bin”Both permissions need to be granted — see Getting Started:
- Accessibility — without it there is no icon to draw on. The app shows the system prompt; grant it and tracking starts immediately, no restart
- Full Disk Access — without it the app can’t size the Trash, so it draws nothing and says so. Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, then relaunch hyperbin
Note — A menu item that opens the right pane When a permission is the blocker, the menu shows an item that opens whichever System Settings pane fixes it, so you don’t have to hunt for it yourself.
The menu bar icon looks wrong or is missing
Section titled “The menu bar icon looks wrong or is missing”- If there’s no icon at all in the menu bar, the app may have failed to load its artwork — relaunch, or reinstall from a fresh download
- On macOS the icon adapts to your menu bar’s appearance automatically
- On Windows it re-renders when you switch between light and dark mode
The effect shivers or jumps
Section titled “The effect shivers or jumps”This was fixed in 1.1.0 (the bin’s position is now read with sub-pixel precision). If you’re on an older build, update: Check for Updates… in the menu.
